Recovering these giants from the peat swamps requires supreme care to ensure the structural integrity of the 50,000-year-old wood remains intact. Once excavated, the timber is milled using specialized equipment capable of handling their extraordinary girth.

The slabs are then carefully kiln-dried to a precise 8 - 10% moisture content. This slow, controlled curing process can take up to a year, ensuring absolute stability before crafting begins. This guarantees the timber will remain impervious to warping in modern, climate-controlled environments.

Precision Crafting

The finishing process is where the true magic of Ancient Kauri is revealed. Each piece undergoes meticulous hand-polishing and sanding through progressively finer grits. We use premium, museum-grade epoxy resins to stabilize any natural voids, preserving the organic live edge while creating a flawless, practical surface.

This obsessive attention to detail unlocks the wood's famous 'chatoyancy' - a mesmerizing, three-dimensional iridescence that catches the light and appears to shift as you move around the table. It is a visual depth that no other timber in the world possesses.

Ceramic Coating Protection

Applying a ceramic coating to your ancient kauri table is the best way to help protect the surface for the many years it will spend in your home. Signature Kauri will apply our professional coating product which works as an extra protective layer in addition to the resin coating your table was finished with in production.

As a liquid polymer, ceramic coatings bond to the resin and act as a first line of defence against scratches, dirt, and water. Since the ceramic coating is hydrophobic, the table's surface will shed liquids and bead at a higher level than the standard resin coating.
